We caught up with Wairarapa jeweller Zoë Porter to talk wedding rings, creating pieces with meaning, when you actually need to start thinking about your bands, and why there really are no rules when it comes to choosing something you’ll wear forever.
From traditional jewellery-making techniques to modern CAD design, Zoë’s approach is thoughtful, considered and very much about quality over quantity.
JEWELLERY WITH MEANING
How would you describe your jewellery and your style?
Self-proclaimed Queen of casual, I like simple things made well. I love supporting other NZ businesses and I'm all about quality over quantity.
I approach designing my jewellery the same way, using only the very best materials and making timeless pieces perfect for everyday wear!
What do you love most about creating jewellery for weddings?
I love that your wedding rings will be worn every day, forever. I love the idea that other wedding day jewellery; a pair of earrings or a bracelet for the day, will hold such special memories and remind you of your big day every time you put them on.
These pieces, I hope, will become family heirlooms, passed down for generations. Jewellery has such a special way of becoming part of you.
FINDING THE ONE
How far out from the wedding should couples start thinking about their wedding rings?
The process of designing and making a pair of wedding rings generally takes around 6-8 weeks, but with the bulk of weddings taking place over the summer months it is best to get in touch as soon as you can.
I aim to have any rings needed for January and February weddings with you before Christmas. Since that is a busy time of year, it's best to be in touch by September or October to ensure I can source everything we need for your special piece. I also have a small selection of ready-made rings for those in a hurry.
Do wedding bands have to "match" the engagement ring, or can you break the rules?
Do what feels right! Some couples match their rings, most don't. This is a piece you will wear every day, and it has to feel right for you.
We can always discuss making some elements match, a similar profile made in different metals, adding an engraving on the inside of each ring, a stone flush set into his ring as a nod towards hers - the options are endless.
What's one thing couples often don't realise when they start looking for wedding rings?
